Serving Our Members in 2019

A Message from Our President

Jun. 27, 2018

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) works with key players in the health care system to increase access to affordable health care.

Health care costs continue to increase. Insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs are rising for nearly everyone. Many people in Illinois struggle to pay for their insurance premiums. Last year, thousands went without coverage.

This year, BCBSIL is proud to remain in the individual market with options across all 102 counties. Our 2019 offerings will reflect our focus on the cost of care through innovative technology, community partnerships and programs. This will help you receive the right care at the right place and the right time.

Our Affordability Cures  endeavor is designed to help us focus more directly on the root causes of excessive costs in the health care system.

We are addressing the opioid crisis on multiple fronts. For instance, we're helping you safely dispose of unused or unwanted medication through our partnership with the Walgreens Safe Medication Disposal Program. Hunger and food insecurity remain an issue in Illinois. That is why we have worked with food banks and mobile food pantries to provide millions of meals to children, families and seniors.

We also provide grants to grassroots organizations with proven track records of combating issues associated with violence by addressing its causes and interrupting violence before it happens. These are just some examples of our work to impact significant health challenges facing our communities.

I would be remiss not to mention our employees, who tirelessly invest their time, resources and talents to give back to the communities in which we live, work and play.

We understand that having health coverage means more than just "having insurance." That's why we are committed to investing in solutions that will lead to a long-term and affordable plan for your health.

Thank you for trusting us with your health coverage needs.

Maurice Smith
President, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois
